Center of Aquaculture Science and Technology for Bluefin Tuna and Other Cultivated Fish | Kinki University 21st Century COE Program
In order to promote the creation of world class universities that are internationally competitive, the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology (MEXT) has selected programs in different academic fields that aim to develop global research and education sites, and is creating '21st Century COE (Centers of Excellence)' to provide these programs with focused support.

The 'Center for Aquaculture Science and Technology for Bluefin Tuna and Other Cultivated Fish' proposed by the Fisheries Laboratory of Kinki University and the Graduate School of Agriculture was selected for one of these COE programs in the field of 'interdisciplinary, combined fields, new disciplines', one of the five fields announced for FY2003.

Prof. Sei-ichiro Ono, the leader of the Distribution and Economics Group, was awared the Japanese Society of Fisheries Science Prize (Award of Merit) with respected to 'Studies on Fisheries Policy of Japan'. The study on economics and distribution of cultured bluefin tuna, which has been conducted in this COE program, also contributed to the prize.

The COE graduate school special lectures will be held in the Shirahama Experiment Station of the Fisheries Laboratory on March 19. Prof. Dr. Roshada Hashim (University Sains Malaysia), Prof. Dr. Ridzwan Abdul Rahman (University Malaysia Sabah) and Prof. Dr. Shigeharu Senoo (University Malaysia Sabah) are invited and give lectures on fish nutrition, coral reef biology and aquaculture.

Our COE Leader, Hidemi Kumai is going to be awarded the Japan Prize for Agricultural Sciences with respect to 'Research on 'Complete Culture of Bluefin Tuna'.

The Association of Japanese Agricultural Scientific Societies consists of approximately 50 academic societies which research on agricultural science, forestry, fisheries, animal medicine, biological production, bioenvironment, social science, biotechnology and other subjects, and therefore the Japan Prize for Agricultural Science awarded by the association is regarded as the greatest honor.

In addition to the research result that we've achieved complete culture in 2002, the researches on the production and shipment of the completely cultured second generation, that is, the industrialization of artificially hatched bluefin tuna, and the education and training for young researchers participating in such research activities also contributed to the prize.

Completely cultured bluefin tuna
We made our first shipment of completely cultured bluefin Tuna fry (the second generation) as seedling for the culture.

The 'Industrialization of Artificially Hatched Bluefin Tuna' is one of the COE program goals. This shipment has ensured the achievement of the goal. For more information, please see the PDF file.
